Responsibilities and Services
The Auditor’s Office provides reliable financial services that ensure financial integrity and promote accountability in government by acting as the “Stewards of Public Funds.”
The County Auditor is not subject to the control of the Commissioners Court or any other County official but is appointed by the district judges serving the County. Both the County Auditor and Commissioners Court are required by law to approve claims for disbursement of County funds. The integrity of County financial administration is entrusted to a dual control system of “checks and balances.”
The County Auditor maintains the integrity of the financial administration of County government by overseeing the County’s financial record-keeping and by assuring that all expenditures comply with the County budget and the law. The County Auditor has continuous access to all financial records of every elected official and department and conducts detailed reviews of all County financial operations.
The primary responsibilities of the Brazos County Auditor consist of:
- Overseeing all financial records, and laws governing the County finances
- Prescribing the system of accounting
- Establishing internal controls and financial safeguards
- Forecasting and certifying revenues for the County budget
- Reporting of County financials
- Approving claims against the County
- Ensuring statutory, accounting, and reporting requirements for County finances are fulfilled
Texas Government Code Sec 2265.001: Recording and Reporting of Electricity, Water and Natural Gas
“Notwithstanding any other law, a governmental entity responsible for payments
for electric, water, or natural gas utility services shall record in an electronic
repository the governmental entity’s metered amount of electricity, water, or
natural gas consumed for which it is responsible to pay and the aggregate costs for
those utility services. The governmental entity shall report the recorded
information on a publicly accessible Internet website with an interface designed for
ease of navigation if available, or at another publicly accessible location.”
